BACK OF HOUSE

This project was in part of my first solo show that was on display at Aldaskeller Wine Co. during the month of March 2024.

My time working in the service industry inspired this collection of photos. Over the years I have worked “front of house” positions as a server, hostess, and most recently, as a barista. However, the portraits here were more influenced by my experience working in the “back of house” as a line and prep cook. 

Prevailing attitudes towards service industry employees lack respect for this kind of work and fail to recognize the previously listed positions as “real jobs” are what this show is about. 

It’s a way to see people that you may not often see. It’s about celebrating and uplifting the hard work that goes into the meal, baked goods or coffee you ordered. It’s recognizing the many minds, hands, and hearts behind the food and beverage scene here in Rochester.
